What netiquette means and how to follow it

In face-to-face communication, we use body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions to show respect for each other. But this facility is not available in case of communication by writing online. Many times the mind remains unclear.

This is the main reason for the introduction of ‘Online Etiquette’ or ‘Netiquette’. It is possible to communicate with everyone better online by following Netiquette. With emphasis on netiquette, most websites and social media now have some code of conduct for users. which everyone has to follow.

Adhering to netiquette can avoid unnecessary trouble online. Many times violation of ‘Internet Etiquette’ can even lead to legal punishment if someone’s dignity is damaged.

Let’s find out how to follow netiquette online.

1. Be Clear About What You Are Talking About

Etiquette should be followed when replying to e-mails, participating in a ‘discussion thread’ or commenting on someone’s post on social media. And in these cases, netiquette is basically to mention the topic that is being talked about first.

2. Please Read Before Sending Or Posting

From our childhood, we have heard, “Think and work.” The same should be followed in the case of netiquette. So before pressing ‘enter’ on the keyboard, read at least twice to see if you understand what you want to say in your e-mail, post or comment. Because one little mistake or wrong word can change the meaning of your entire speech.

3.  Keep In Mind Who Is On The Other End

We may only be looking at a digital screen when we’re online, but when we’re talking to someone, there’s a human being on the other end.  This fact should not be forgotten.

What we can never say in person, can be said easily online.  So before saying anything to someone, remember that everyone has their own feelings and beliefs.  That is, one should not misbehave or be harsh with anyone in any way.

4.  Spread The Knowledge

The internet was born to ensure easy access to information.  So good ‘online etiquette’ is to share what you know with others and help those who ask for help.

Our cyber world has become so big because of this knowledge sharing mentality of people.  Moreover, if you spread knowledge among others, it also increases your own knowledge.

5.  Do Not Copy Others’ Writing

Internet has given us the opportunity to get all kinds of information for various types of work.  But occasionally many are seen sharing information and quotes from unknown sources.  In this case, care should be taken while sharing any writing or content so that the name and identity of the original author is mentioned correctly.

6.  Beware Of Sarcasm Or Mockery

Be very careful while speaking with mockery or sarcasm.  Because the person you are mocking cannot hear the tone of your voice or see your face.  So he may not understand the main meaning of your words.  Sarcasm is often the cause of relationship breakdown.

You can use emojis or emoticons while writing to solve this problem.  Or you can tell him before he speaks, so that he does not take the words seriously.

7. Don’t Spam

We all hate junk messages. Similarly, our friends or colleagues also dislike such messages. So always stay away from spreading unnecessary, unreliable words and rumours.

8. Introduce Yourself

Another ‘Internet Etiquette’ we often forget about. That is, mentioning your name as the author in those places where the matter is not clear. So, like many other writings, you should add your signature at the end of the e-mail.

9. Protect Privacy

Do not forward e-mails, photos or statuses exchanged between multiple people without their permission. Also, one should be very careful while sharing personal information of others and never do it without permission. Among all online etiquette, protecting the privacy of others is especially important. Be very careful even when talking about someone else with your best friend.

10. Respect The Opinions Of Others

Good online etiquette is to allow others to express their opinions. Always refrain from the practice of belittling opinions different from your own. In any matter, you can express your objection while showing respect to others. Be respectful of others’ beliefs and opinions when speaking onlin.
