The use of artificial intelligence to protect biodiversity
Naturally, various species of animals become extinct on our planet and are replaced by new ones. However, due to deforestation, hunting, pollution or bringing various aggressive animals into the local environment, the rate of animal extinction is much higher now.
One study found that species are now becoming extinct at a rate of 1,000 times more than the 60 million years before humans came to earth.
There are about 1 million species in the world, which are now at risk of extinction. And to save these animals and other animals, 2 million square miles of the earth is reserved. It may sound like a lot of places, but it’s only 3% of the world’s total area. The responsibility of conserving these areas has been taken through various initiatives like “Protected Forests” or “National Parks”.
However, even from these protected areas, poachers kill animals, cut down trees illegally and pollute land and water bodies. As a result, it has become difficult for many animals to survive even in protected areas.
Again, it is almost impossible to prevent these irregularities in the conventional system of surveillance. So now is the time to take new initiatives to save the animals. And in this case, technology can help us, so that these endangered animals can be saved from extinction.
With the help of artificial intelligence or AI, it is much easier to keep an eye on sea and forest animals. Animals at risk of extinction can be automatically identified through information about their breeding, passage and hunting habits. Researchers and officials can easily monitor the movements of large animals such as rhinos, whales and elephants through satellite images.
“Semantic segmentation” is one of the technologies that will be used in the future based on AI and machine learning. Semantic segmentation is the technique of identifying specific objects or animals from pictures. It can automatically identify different animals from pictures or videos.
Technology such as artificial intelligence and drones can also be used to identify and track wildlife. In this way, officials working on wildlife conservation can be helped and animals can be protected from predators.
With the help of this technology it is possible to keep an eye on marine animals. Researchers have already accurately calculated the number of sea creatures of a species called sea-lions. For this they have used deep-learning algorithms, which include AI technology.
In addition to these, artificial intelligence technologies such as ‘robotics machine learning’ or ‘drone image datasets’ can be used to monitor animals in protected forests. It is easy to calculate the current number of those animals.
Similarly, with the help of AI drones and computer vision technology, animals can be monitored and their species and species can be identified. As a result, researchers can easily get information in this regard.
A machine learning algorithm built with AI, which works with a huge amount of training datasets to identify different species of animals, is being used. The AI technology used in elephant identification is a tool that can distinguish between Asian elephants, African wild elephants and African savanna elephants.
